A family memory

The Story Behind It

My Mom, Mildred (Baker) Sill has my Grandmother's (Mrs. Alonzo (Zelma) Bakers 1938 cookbook. This chocolate cake recipe was one Grandma used to bake a lot. Maybe she even took it to one of the Baker reunions.

1

Ingredients

½ cup butter
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 cup sour milk
1 tsp soda
2 ½ cups flour
1 tsp baking powder (rounded)
⅔ cup cocoa dissolved in ½ cup boiling water
¼ tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla

2

Directions

Sift flour, soda, baking powder and salt.
Cream short, slowly beat in egg yolks and vanilla.
Add cocoa.
Add flour mixture alternately with sour milk.
Fold in stiff beaten egg whites.
Pour into 2 greased layer pans and Bake 25 minutes at 375. or use 9” square.
Grandma probably used a wood cook stove for this.
