A family memory

The Story Behind It

Karen received this recipe from her mother-in-law, Alice Skogen, who obtained it from her own mother-in-law, Mae Skogen. Grandma Mae Skogen worked at the pickle factory in Ojibwa many years ago and collected many pickle recipes.

1

Ingredients

1 (3 qt) jar dill pickles
3 cups sugar
2 Tbsp pickling spices
1 cup tarragon vinegar

2

Directions

Drain the pickles and cut them into ¼-inch chunks.
Combine the sugar, pickling spices and tarragon vinegar in a saucepan.
Bring the syrup to a boil and boil for 1 minute.
Allow the syrup to cool slightly.
Return the pickle pieces to the jar and pour the syrup over them.
Seal the jar and turn it upside down for 15–20 minutes.
Turn the jar upright and refrigerate the pickles for 10 days before serving.
